Day 55 Geraldton, WA

On the way to Geraldton we passed one of the most aussie named roadhouses ever and lovely wild flowers.

Geraldton is a great town. It has the best foreshore area I have ever seen with a youth precinct that features a rage cage (well used by the twins) in which you can play soccer, basketball, netball etc in a totally covered cage, playground, water park, multipurpose centre, bike paths all next to a pristine beach ! Ofcourse a Labor Premier, Geoff  Gallop started it. We were lucky to catch the last day of a Sailing Festival- a curtain raiser for the Dirt Harthog Festival. So there were markets and music.

We also visited the HMAS Sydney II memorial and took a tour provided by volunteers. It is a very moving and well designed memorial to recognise the loss of all crew on board (645) when it was sunk by the German "Kormoran" ship in November 1941. The wrecks were only discovered in 2008. There are lots of features to the memorial which can be better viewed at:

Joel is reading the book 'Batavia' by Peter Fitzsimons so he loved the Western Australian Museum which had a section on shipwrecks. Geraldton is a great place to get your car fixed, while you take in the history and surrounds. Unfortunately we didn't get to the lighthouse.
