Day 21 - 24 Alice Springs, NT

Day 1
Civilisation! There's no town like Alice. I cannot express how wonderful it was to walk down the aisle of a supermarket and be able to peruse a variety of reasonably priced, familiar brands and fresh food, can be. It was like a dream. After exorbitant prices in the outback, I wonder how local people can afford anything other than baked beans and two minute noodles. We do take our variety and low prices of food for granted. Note to self- be more grateful.

Day 2
A day of domestics and homework for the kids. The lure of the caravan park's pool, slides, BMX circuit, hanging with new friends and jumping pillow proved too alluring and allowances were made. Guess the subject of the school project? Government! I think Joel and I can be credited in their bibliographies.

Day 3
We visited the Desert Park in Alice Springs. We were impressed by the talk by local Aboriginal man Damien, about desert bush tucker and traditional tools. We were washed out by sudden rains so it was lucky they give you wrist bands enabling you to come and go all day. We returned for the bird show and was impressed by how the trainer raised a treat in her hands and the birds came from wherever they lived, did their thing and flew off.  The nocturnal centre was great, cute bilbies, strange reptiles and other native animals kept the kids entranced. Lots of lovely native wild flowers. Didn't really like seeing the dingoes, kangaroos and emus in captivity- prefer seeing them in the wilds. Great place to visit, expensive entry but worth it. Run by the NT government.

The Bush tomatoes were YUM!

  1. I understand about the relief a 'proper' supermarket brings!
